Standing Above the Clouds

Short Documentary | 16 minutes | USA | Directed by Jalena Keane-Lee

On the island of Hawai’i, Mauna Kea is sacred ground for many indigenous Hawaiians. The mountain is also coveted by astronomers, and home to 13 different telescopes. Since July, 2019, protesters have blocked the access road to the proposed site of a new 30-meter telescope that, at 18 stories tall, would be the biggest yet.

This short documentary follows three sets of indigenous mothers and daughters as their fight brings them from the mountain to the courtroom and, in the end, closer together.

Tokyo Hula

Feature Documentary | 72 minutes | USA | Directed by Lisette Marie Flanary

Hula is big business in Japan. It is estimated that there are more than 2 million people dancing hula in Japan—more than the entire population of Hawai’i. What fuels this Japanese fascination with hula, and how do the keepers of Hawaiian culture participate in this cross-cultural exchange.
